Alfred Ivan, (Ivan), was born in Maitland Hospital on 15 October 1937.
His schooling was at East Maitland Primary and Maitland Boys High Schools.
On leaving school he commenced employement as a Painter and Decorator working with his brother, John and Ted Goldsmith, contracting for F.H. Compton & Son builders of East Maitland. He worked in this field for some years then worked at Steggles catching poultry for the frozen food trade.
On 21 October 1961 he married his sister's school friend Jenny Halbesma at Scott's Presbyterian Church in Maitland by the Reverend Haxton.
They lived in the Maitland Area where their two eldest sons, Tony and Gregory were born and then they worked in various capacities on farms in and around the Upper Hunter Valley, where their third son, Jamie was born at Scone, as well as share-farming in the Singleton/Long Point area before moving to Bandengrove on a Dairy and then returning to East Maitland and back to catching chickens for Steggles then to driving the feed trucks delivering the feed to the various sheds.
The dust from the feed affected Ivan's lungs, similar to silicosis, and he was forced into ceasing to work because of this. He tried to return to painting and found that he was unable to work and he then had to rely on his wife to be the breadwinner for the family.
Luckily their sons were all working and this eased the strain conciderably. In 1992, Ivan was accepted to go onto the Invalid Pension.
Ivan was diagnosed as having Lung Cancer early in December, 1997. On Thursday 11 Dec 1997 he has to have tests carried carried out at the Mater Hospital, Waratah and this was followed the following Tuesday 16 Dec 1997 for surgery at the John Hunter Hospital to have the lower, middle and part of the upper lobes of the right lung removed.

Ivan and Jenny sold their 55 Endevour Street, RUTHERFORD Via MAITLAND. N.S.W. 2320 home to do some travelling with their caravan but Ivan was getting worse so in early 2000 they purchased a house in Raymond Terrace.

Ivan's sister, Joan, celebrated her and her husband's Wedding Anniversary on Sunday 15 March 2001. All of their relatives were there including Ivan and Jennie's children. The guests suggested that they would all go to see Ivan the following day (Monday 16 March 2001) but Joan said that if they wished to see Ivan whilst he was still alive they had better go that afternoon, which they all did.
After they had all had a talk with Ivan, Joan asked him if he wished to see anybody else and he replied that he was satidgied and had seen all those he wished. She then told him to let go.
Ivan died at 6.30am the following morning.
