This is information taken from the Medhurst Pioneers Book by Bertha Strick,
5/65 Regent Street, New Lambton. N.S.W. 2305 Phone (049) 571034.
On page 41 there is a story on Edward William Medhurst who married Maria Jane
Cafe (nee Merrick) the widow of a Thomas Cafe, who was a policeman. Maria and
Thomas had 5 children, 4 of whom were still living at Thomas' death. On page
96 the story continues, Thomas Cafe died 13th June, 1885 at Dural, Jerry's
Plains, by gunshot wound accidently inflicted by himself whilst climbing
through a fence.
Their second child John Rowland Cafe, a well known grazier from putty, died at
the young age of 43 years after a painful illness of six weeks. He is buried
at Whittingham Cemetery, Singleton.
John and his wife Mary had a son Geoffery Ernest in 1908 and the boy was
orphaned at the age of fourteen, His father dying in 1918 and his mother in
1922. It could be that he was taken in if not adopted by his mother's brother
Wilfred Cobcroft and his wife Eva Mary Medhurst as they had no children of
their own. Eva Mary was the third child of Maria Jane Cafe/Medhurst by Edward
Wiliam Medhurst and John was her second child by Thomas Cafe this made both
Eva and Wilfred his direct relatives. There is a thought that Geoff may have
inherited Eva and Wilfred's property
Alice Maud (Madeline) Cafe died at 2 years and 9 months of age due to a cold.
She is buried at Bungarrabi, Howes Valley.
Thomas Cafe, an ex sergeant of police in the N.S.W. Police Force lived to a
great age of 92 years. He had been stationed at several areas in N.S.W.
Leo Cafe lived at Howes Valley for most of his life moving to Singleton prior
to his death.
Charles Cafe lived most of his life on the North N.S.W. Coast District until
his death.
