PERSONEN

[528] Johannes Douwes and Eekjen Halbes are the common forefathers of the Halbesma family. They lived in De Valom surroundings.
Johannes Douwes was a farmer, councilman, tax collector and last but not least a trader. He combined all these jobs as his forefathers did.
Because of their possessions and their jobs they were be held in great esteem. Johannes Douwes was one of the richest men in his surroundings. His grandfather was a member of parliament in the province of Friesland.
Johannes Douwes and Eekjen Halbes have had eleven children. One girl died when she was a child. All the other children all married and had children as well.
The problem for this "rich" family was of how they could keep their esteem while they had to devide the heritage in ten parts. This problem was solved by a "marriage-policy". All the children of Johannes Douwes and Eekjen Halbes were married to a partner who had rich parents as well. It wasn't easy to find these partners. The Halbesma children mostly married with children from the families Sikkema, Annema, Hesling. Two sons of Johannes Douwes married daughters of a clergyman.
Johannes Douwes died about 24 Feb 1780 which was before Napoleon of France decreed that everbody was to have surnames and in 1811 his wife Eekjen Halbes was left to select a surname, she chose and extended version of her family name Halbes by adding MA to it and this was also adopted by her sons. See the text file attached to her Group Sheet.
Copy of the decree in English is as follows:-
The family name which the father (or in his absence the grandfather on the father's side) has declared to want to take, or which shall remain given to him [where a surname was already in use], shall be given to all children that are kept [recognized - legitimate?], to bear and to use in documents. To this end, in his declaration the father (or grandfather) must list the exact children and grandchildren, along with their place of residence. And such of our subjects whose father (or grandfather) is still alive need only state that he is still alive, with the name of the place of his residence. [translation by Dan Gamber]
Email from Douwe Halbesma about Halbesma Reunion during Simmer 2000 as follows:-
The descendants from these four sons, Lieuwe, Douwe, Halbe and Foeke joined the Halbesma-"re-union".
There is a Plaque on the wall of the MennoniteChurch of Damwoude, which consists of two shields under a crown one shield belonged to Johannes Douwes and the other to his wife Eekjen Halbes. Parts of these shields were later incorporated in a coat of arms.
There were very old gravestones on the churchyard of Dantumawoude. Till a few months ago there was still the gravestone of Johannes Douwes (who died in 1780) and of Eekjen Halbes (who died in 1809). When we had the family-day in Friesland, we discovered that the (four!!!) old gravestones of our family were removed. This is against all rules because the mayor of Dantumadeel (the region where Dantumawoude is) had decided, about 30 years ago, that it was not allowed to remove them. Now I've send a letter to the Church asking what happened. It's already 6 weeks ago that I send the letter and up untill now I haven't got a reply.
The above information is from an email from Douwe Halbesma.

PERSONEN

[857] Veehouder en tuinder (gardener) te Suawoude en Bergum, in 1953 immigrated to
Winnipeg, Canada, daar assistant bedrijfsleider op het grote proebedrijf van
University of Manitoba.
Harry Halbesma writes in 2001:-
Our parents Stanley (Sape) and Patricia (Piertje) with 5 children, Harrt, Halley, Alice, Andy and Ron immagrated from Bergum, Friesland to the provence of Manitoba, Canada in the Spring of 1953.
Dad had a small Dairy Farm in Bergum, Friesland and a large grain and sugar beet farme from Homewood, about 100km South of Winnipeg, sponsored us. In the early Fifties there were about 20 Dutch families in this area and their descendants today count in the hundreds. The living conditions were terrible for most of these families. Some lived in chicken shacks and small sheds.
Our family worked two summers in the sugar beets with nothing to do during the long severe winters. Two years later, we moved to Winnipeg and after assorted jobs, dad was hired as a herdsman at the University of Manitoba where he worked till his retirement. Our parents loved their gardening and flowers and won many trophies and ribbons for their efforts.
Dad Passed away in 1995 at the age of 87. Our mother at 91 is still with us.
Harry worked 30 years for Canada Safeway, a large food chain. In 1985 with is wife, Shirley and six children, started Harry's Foods in Winnipeg and is retired.
Halley's husband John was a carpenter and is retired.
Alice and Arie moved to Hepworth, Ontario and bought a Dairy Farm and are retired.
Andy was a part owner of an Auto Body Reoair Shop, but because of poor health has been retired for many years.
Ron works for the Government of Canada and is still working.
Our extended family has grown to 75 members.
Thanks are to God for the many blessings the Halbesma's have received here in Canada.
