PERSONEN

[146] Nancy Ann, second child of Alma (Bates) Brown and James Arthur BATES, was born 9th February, 1944 in Hay, N.S.W. where her father was a guard at the Prisoner of War Camp, for Italians and Japanese.
Her mother Alma was living in a defacto relationship with James Arthur Bates or Arthur as he was called. Alma was already married to a Raynor Gordon Brown and left him prior to 1942.
Alma and Arthur had the children christened Catholic in about 1950 when they lived behind the Commonwealth Bank (now a West-Pac Bank) in John Street, in Singleton Nancy then being about seven years of age. Nancy always liked animals and she used to carry a hen around with her when she was a child, after she left school she also had a fox terrier dog.
The family later moved into a tent in the camping reserve at the rear of where the Singleton Municiple Swimming Pool used to be in Gowrie Street along side the Railway Line.
The family was living in the poorest of circumstances, mainly because of their parents spending what money they had or could earn on alcohol at the local hotels. The children were a well known sight in front of these pubs, waiting for their parents to leave and return home.
When the Council closed the camping reserve the family was moved further along the railway line, closer to the Hunter River. Arthur had purchased an Army Marquee at the Army Disposals in Newcastle and this then became their new home. Over the years additions and extensions were made to the Marquee, from crates and used roofing iron.
It wasn't until she was seven years old that her mother allowed her to attend St Augustus Catholic School in Singleton, when she was about ten years old she went to St Xaviers Catholic School, another Primary School in Singleton. After two years there she attended Sigleton's St Catherines College a high school for girls which she left when she was old enough at fifteen years of age.
She well remembers the disastrous 1955 Flood when most of the Hunter Valley was inundated by flood water and the family, as well as most other affected Singleton people, were evacuated to Singleton Railway Station, sleeping in the stranded Railway Carraiges.
There was a severe shortage of food, and a cow, which had been swept away by the torrent, was caught by the men folk as it washed past and then killed, butchered and cooked to feed the stranded people.
After some days the army rescued them with Army Ducks (Amphibious vehicles) and took them to the high ground at the Army Barracks. The children, much to their disgust, were marched like little soldiers to attend school each morning. They stayed there for about three weeks until the water's subsided and Singleton was cleaned up.
Most of their belongings, meager as they were were lost, except for her mother's Galah who's cage had been placed up as high as possible inside the humpy. During the flood a worker for the P.M.G. (now Telstra) was near the humpy when he heard cocky calling, "Come Quick, Come Quick!" and thinking it was a person in distress rushed to investigate.
She started work in Market Gardens owned by Mr Bob Bevan almost immediately after leaving school as well as other seasonal work such as Grape picking at Tulloch's Vineyard at Fordwich, Bulga where she was a specialist picker to pick selected Table Grapes.
She left Singleton at 17 to move to South Australia where her brother Jim was living. There she worked at various jobs, including a stint of grave digging and spray painting farm machinery.
She moved back to NSW at 20 years of age moving in with her half sister Kathleen Brown (from her mother's marriage to Raynor Brown) in Wickham. She obtained work in the Laundry of the Royal Newcastle Hospital for about a year when she moved back to South Australia with Robert James Willis who she had met playing competition darts. They married in Murray Bridge in the Catholic Church on Swansport Road, Murray Bridge on 22 January 1966.
After a short time they moved back to Newcastle because Robert was very homesick. Their daughter, Kerrie-Ann was born on 2 January 1967 at the Mater Hospital, Waratah. After her birth Nancy resumed work in the Laundry at the Royal Newcastle Hospital.
It was during this time that Robert and Nancy seperated.
Nancy contracted Hepatitus which she thinks she may have caught from handling contaminated articles in the Hospital Laundry. She was living at 58 Bean Street, Gateshead West, in a Housing Commission Home which she and Robert had been trying to buy. Whilst she was at work Kerrie-Ann was being looked after by a Mrs Kamine who lived at the end of their street.
She left the Hospital Laundry job and worked at car detailing for a Col Beck who had a new and used car business selling Morris Minors and Morris 1100 cars and also helped Col Beck's wife to clean her house.
She divorced Robert in 1972 and later married William Halbesma 20 April 1973 Bill adopted Kerri-Ann.
They tried for a family of their own but this was not to be as Nancy suffered three eptopic pregnancies (foetus developing in the falopian tube) due to the fitting of the "Delcon Shield" (a contraception device, unknown to her, banned in America but still being used in Australia) resulting in her being unable to have any children. Her case was written up in medical journals by her doctor.
She worked at the Newcastle Lamp Works where she made flurescent tubes, from 24 April 1971 till 31 January 1986 being promoted to the position of Leading Hand.
Her husband Bill was retrenched from the BHP and they purchased a Marine Centre at Maitland near where they were living on their thirty acre property at Rosebrook, North of Maitland along the Hunter River.
Nancy kept working at her job at the lamp works until they sold the Marine Centre and they both retired due to bad backs.
They sold the property and moved to a six acre property near Hay Point south of Mackay in Queensland, which they had purchased some years previously. Nancy and Bill designed and built a large brick-veneer house employing only a few trades people, but with the help of a lot of friends and relatives. They are still improving the property.
Nancy spends her spare time making pottery, having been taught by a friend, Helen Harvey, and she has also completed a two year and a half year cerificate course in pottery at the Mackay College of TAFE. She is a member of Pioneer Pioneer Potters a local pottery club.
Most of her pottery is sold at Flea Markets around the Mackay area, and in the local Tourist Information centre but due to the large number of potters in the region the prices of articles are sold only to cover the costs of materials, but she likes to create.
For sport she enjoys social tennis.
On 27 February 2001 she was operated on at the Mackay Base Hospital to remove her Gall Blader. He neice Patricia Biddle (nee Hayter) also had the same operation on the same day. They were both admitted to mixed sex wards where male and female patients were placed into the same public wards and they have both made oficial complaints.
