John Thomas Bridge was born on 15th March 1845, the son of Joseph and Mary Ann Bridge (nee Carpenter). He married Sarah Sadler (Born 1845 Wollombi) on 12th April 1868 at the Anglican Church at Singleton.
John first helped his brother-in-law Charles Sadler start his selection before taling up an adjoining selection south of Quipolly Creek in 1871, the property now owned by Mrs Pengilly and her son Len. Both men came from the Wollombi area.
John was joined by his wife Sarah and small daughter Mary (May) who was born at Ourimbah. Their eldest son William was the first white child born in that area of the Quipolly Valley.
About 1873 the Bridge family moved to "Rocky Hall", Quipolly Creek, named after a family property near Eden on the South Coast. This is now the property of Laurie & Phyllis Roworth (nee Bridge), Phyllis being the granddaughter of John & Sarah Bridge.
As well as having "Rocky Hall", John Bridge owned draught horses and waggons and ran teams to and from Murrurundi into the north-west of the State and into Queensland where he owned property. The coming of the railway past Quirindi in 1877 meant less work for John Bridge's team. This led to him taking his horses and laden waggons into Queensland in 1887, with the intention of selling his teams in an area where there was no railway. He was caught in a storm and the drenching he received resulted in pneumonia. He died at Lucky Creek, between Georgetown and Croydon in Queensland, on 26th November 1887, aged 42 years.
{an extract from a letter to Sarah from George Warby, Sub-Inspector of Police is quoted in Marion Scotts book.}
So Sarah Bridge was left a widow in 1887 with eight children to rear. may, the eldest, was 18 years of age, whilst the youngest, twins Lillas & Everard, were two years old. Sarah died in November 1917, aged 72 years."
