Kerri-Ann HALBESMA was born 2 January 1967 at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital at Waratah a suburb of Newcastle in N.S.W. to Robert Willis and Nancy Ann Bates.
She attended Primary School at Gateshead West for a couple of years and then when her mother, who had divorced her father and married Bill Halbesma some years previously, moved to their 30 acre property at Rosebrook, along the Hunter River, North of Maitland, she attended the small country school there with only sixteen students and one teacher, a Mr. Mckimm, who taught all ages and all subjects in the one room school. It was obvious that it was too much for the teacher having to cover all the subjects and that her education was lacking so she was sent to Telarah Primary School for one year to complete her primary education in preparation to commencing High School.
She commenced at the Maitland Girls High School in 1981 for years 7 to year 10
As permanent work was very hard to come by she had a number of short term and casual jobs such as a check out operator at Woolworths, Greenhills, East Maitland.
After the birth of her son John in about 1985 she moved away from her mother and step-father's home and into a small flat in Rutherford for about 12 months until 1986 when she was granted a two bedroom Commission Unit in Thompson Street, Tenambit as suburb of East Maitland. At the end of 1988 she packed her belongings and joined her mother, who with her husband, had moved onto their property at Hay Point just South of Mackay in Queensland. It was here that her son John commenced pre-school at Alligator Creek Primary School.
She met Peter John Smith at a Night Club in Mackay in 1989 when she and her cousins, Rhonda and Patricia Hayter were out celebrating Rhonda's forthcomming marriage the next day, and Peter accompanied her to the wedding. They formed a defacto relationship and have lived in a number of rented accomodations including Investigator Street, Andergrove, a suburb of Mackay from 1992 until July 2000.
Peter is a Carpenter and Kerrie does some casual work to suplement the income. Kerrie had worked for some time at a coffee bar called Expresso in Mackay's major shopping complex called Canelands but when her employer would not give her time to take holidays after working there for thirteen months she resigned in August 1995 because she was committed to being in the Hunter Valley in September.
She also started work as a Table Waitress in Canelands 6 June 1995 working at both jobs until her break. Her Table Waitress employer had no problem with her taking leave, she was employed there until the end of 1996. Kerrie also helped out at "Birralee" Child Minding Centre where she was often called upon to fill in for absentees.
She worked as a courier driver for Venus Couriers for about a year, she enjoyed this type of work very much.
Her hobbies are, like her mother, Pottery, and like her Grandfather James Arthur Bates, she enjoys the sport of cricket and is involved playing Indoor Cricket where she has played with winning teams having collecting many trophies.
Her pottery feats include making a number of medieval chess sets where the pieces are very individual people with their own character, the board is made from etched glass surounded by a timber frame with brass handles. This unique set won first prize in the Pottery section at the Finch Hatton 1998 Show and went on to be Judged the most outstanding Arts Entry at that show.
This Chess Set has been sold to Mackay Gynacologist, Dr Boyd, husband of the then current Mayor of Mackay, Julie Boyd.
She feels that she has inherited some other Bates traits which come from both her Granfather and her Grandmother (also a Bates, but from Mudgee) in the form of a Big Back End and a Large Hooter (nose).
Peter announced, mid November at a dinner at Hay Point Hotel, that he had asked Kerry to marry him and that she had accepted.
Her mother Nancy's reaction was, "Well I hope your going to elope so it won't cost me any money!" (Just joking!!) Other people at the dinner were quite astounded with Nancy's statement and Gus Biggar ordered a bottle of bubbly for drinks all around. They married in May 1999 at the Dolphin Heads Resort, North of Mackay.
Peter found work as a Form Fixer at the new Power Station construction at Millmerran in early 2000 and after settling in Kerrie joined him and they live in a nearby township called Pittsworth. Millmerran is situated between Toowoomba and Goondawindi while Pittsworth is just south of Toowoomba.
Kerrie now works part-time inocculating day old chickens in local chicken hatcheries where she inocculates 1000's of chickens a day.
