Ballot winners head for country
The population of the small Queensland town of Jandowae is set to surge, after the local council offered $1 blocks of land.
Fourteen Queensland families, and one each from Victoria, NSW and the ACT, have beaten 230 contestants in a ballot for the land.
The ballot was forced after Wambo Shire Council announced the offer in April and received more than 1000 expressions of interest worldwide from people wanting to relocate to the town, which has a population of 900 and lies 260km west of Brisbane.
Pittsworth couple Peter and Kerrie-Ann Smith were ecstatic to learn of their $1 win yesterday. "I'm stoked," Mrs Smith said. "This is an opportunity to own our own home."
Winners also have been drawn from Bundaburg, Caboolture, Toowoomba, Bribie Island, and Carindale, Springwood and Jindalee in Brisbane.
Council chief executive Colin O'Connor said although the venture cost $6000 per block, new residents would breathe life into the town.

Vote settles land rush at Jandowae
By DANIEL FRANKLIN
Brothers-in-law from Sydney head the list of people heading to Jandowae, lured by $1 blocks of residential land.
The doctor and dentist, plus four business operators, had land allocated to them by Wambo Shire Council in a resolution last week.
But the remaining 17 blocks were allocated by ballot yesterday.
Council chief executive officer Mr Colin O'Connor said most of the new landowners were from other parts of Queensland.
Husband and wife couples will each travel from Larnook, New South Wales, and Mt Albert, Victoria, while a man will relocate from Canberra.
Eight "reserves'' also were balloted in the event that council did not receive a response from one of the lucky 17.
Yesterday's allocation followed 12 industrial/commercial blocks of land being earlier designated to businesses across Australia.
The land recipients are: Graeme and Alan Rubner, Bundaberg; Michael and Annette Radziejowski, Larnook; Karen and Natalis Irianto, Springwood; David Clatworthy, Torquay; Mark and Michelle Cashen, Point Vernon; T. Crowther, Caboolture; Gordon and Dorothy Hill, Mt Albert; Joe and Shez Robertson, Ducklo; Karen Dickman, Jindalee; Leah Halstead, Windorah; Allan Hyde, Canberra; D. Lawrence and J. Fearns, Coolum Beach; Michael Baxter, Toowoomba; Gary and Terri Gaudry, Bribie Island; Alistair Gonsal, Carindale; Peter Smith, Pittsworth; and George Laurie, Toowoomba.
The reserves are: T. King, Dubbo; John and Marion Scollary, Ashmore; Christina Palmer, Broken Hill; B. O'Donnell and A. Costin, Caboolture; Lee Gribble, Nerang; O'Neill, Gumdale; Rodney and Deborah Hewitt, Palmwoods; and Mr and Mrs J. Stewart, Tenterfield.
