[186] Thomas James Bates a Brickmaker from Dubbo, N.S.W. was born in 1867, his registration No.12318 on the BDM's show him as being christened James Thomas and this caused some confusion in tracing him..(This information came from the Pioneer's records up-dated 1994 (grid N 9)).
He married Sarah Fairs on 1st March, 1900 in the Church of Holy Trinity, Dubbo N.S.W. Registration No.1167 Sarah's date of birth is unknown but the year of her birth was 1867 in Orange N.S.W.
Winesses to the wedding were a John Bates (his brother) and a Jessie Crawford.
It is known that Sarah was already pregnant with Alma who was born in Dubbo 16th September, 1900. This information came from the original Certificate of Marriage which was slightly dammaged in the devastating 1955 Hunter Valley flood. This certificate is in the possesion of Nancy Halbesma
Thomas and his family left Dubbo sometime in 1903.
He was employed at the 'Newcastle Brick and Tile Works' at Waratah. This brickworks was very large in it's day but it has since been demolished and the site is now the 'K-Mart Shopping Centre'. He was crushed between the buffers of two railway trucks, possibly coal hoppers, and later died in Wallsend Hospital on 25 October 1917. Death Registration No.16092.
The Coroner, Charles Hibble findings, on 27 October 1917, were that he was crushed between a railway truck and a loading stage.
Following is a Typed copy of a letter edged in black sent to the Dubbo
Dispatch, 9th November, 1917.
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 9TH, 1917
DUBBO DISPATCH
PERSONEL
AN EX-DUBBO MAN AT NEWCASTLE WRITING WITH REFERENCE TO THE DEATH OF MR THOMAS BATES, WHO DIED IN THE WALLSEND HOSPITAL THE AFTER SUSTAINING TERRIBLE INJURIES, SAYS. "POOR TOM BATES WAS A BRICKMAKER, ALL HIS LIFE, A MAN WHOSE HEART WAS AS SOLID AS THE BRICKS HE MADE. HE WAS A MAN EVERY INCH OF HIM. HIS LAST HOURS PROVED THAT.
HE WAS BADLY CRUSHED BETWEEN THE BUFFER OF TWO TRUCKS; HIS RIBS WERE ALL CRUSHED IN, AND SEVERAL OF THEM WERE FRACTURED. HIS LEFT ARM WAS CAUGHT BY THE BUFFER ON THE ELBOW, AS THE PALM RESTED ON THE HIP AND WAS FEARFULLY SMASHED. BESIDES THESE INJURIES THE SYSTEM RECEIVED A SHOCK SUFFICIENT TO KILL MOST MEN. BUT TOM BATES DIDN'T EVEN GIVE A GROAN. HE WAS CONCIOUS TO THE LAST, AND DIED WITH A SMILE ON HIS FEATURES. THOUGH HE REALIZED FROM THE FIRST THERE WAS NO HOPE HE WAS QUITE RESIGNED AND ONLY ONCE HE SAID IN A CASUAL SORT OF WAY, "I AM SUFFERING TERRIBLE PAIN". DECEASED WAS A BROTHER OF MR.J.BATES AND MRS.W.LANGBY OF DUBBO" DECEASED LIVED IN DUBBO FROM A BOY TILL 14 YEARS AGO AND WAS A MAN UNIVERSALLY ESTEEMED.
He was buried in Wallsend Cemetery in the Church of England portion, Division D
Section 1 Allotment 139 in a double plot on 27 October 1917, The service was conducted by Reverend J. C. V. Mathers. Winesses were a William Durie and a Leslie Atkinson. (This information provided by Wally Blanchard). He preceded his wife Sarah who is burried next to him in Allotment 137.
His epitaph inscription reads as follows:
"As true a heart that ever beat,
has passed from Earth,
His memory dwells, within the heart,
of those, who knew his worth."
The grave site was in a very delapidated state when visited 28 Feb, 1996 and has been reconditioned with the surrounds mended and concrete covered with tiles on the top as well as glazed ceramic plaques for both his wife Sarah and himself set so that they are easily read. The plaques were made by his grand-daughter Nancy Halbesma (nee Bates) the concreting and fixing of the tiles was done by Nancy's husband Bill with the assistance of his grandson Jim Bates and another grand-daughter Pearl Hayter (nee Bates) as well as Aldo Florian, the Husband of another grand-daughter Kathleen Florian (nee Brown).
Three graves further up hill to their right is the grave of their grandson Thomas Brown, This grave was never marked, as a mater of fact his sisters did not even know of it's existence until investigations by Bill Halbesma located it in 1997 and up-dated the Newcastle Council's records. This grave has also been concreted and tiled with a glazed ceramic plaque.

[182] His registration No.12318 on the BDM's show him as being christened James Thomas and this caused some confusion in tracing him..(This information came from the Pioneer's records up-dated 1994 (grid N 9)).
