[279] Ivy Sarah Ann MEDHURST 15th July, 1901 - 22nd May, 1989
Ivy's birth was registered in MARTINDALE, MUSWELLBROOK. Registration No. 24425, her father was Jonothan J MEDHURST and her Mother Eliza CAFE. She was the seventh child of thirteen children. The family were Graziers, Dairy Farmers and Pig farmers in the upper PUTTY area where they milked the cows, skimmed the cream from the milk, the skimmed milk was fed to the pigs.
On a regular basis the pigs and cream were taken to market at SINGLETON, which in those days was quite an ardous journey taking some SEVEN DAYS. The pigs would follow the covered wagon and were fed grain and skimmed milk at regular intervals until they reached their destination.
Ivy must have been involved with James Arthur BATES well before 27th March, 1928 as it was on this date that Bertha May (Betty) was born. Arthur, as he was called, was married to and living with Mary Jane Gibbs and their youngest daughter, Joyce Catherine was born SIX MONTHS and THREE WEEKS previously on the 6 September, 1927.
When Bertha May was born and was given her mother's surname of MEDHURST.
The two other children, Madge (Midge) BATES born 17 November, 1929 and James Keith BATES born 12 November, 1933. Were all given their father's, James Arthur BATES, surname.
After Ivy left Arthur, one source says it was because she could not put up way he was treating her, She took the children with her to Sydney.
When Ivy got involved with Darcy Cardwell, she sent the children to Arthur. He tried to raise the two girls with the help of his sister Maude Harris with whom he was staying at the time. James Keith, who was about 3 years old then, was farmed out to Arthur's estranged wife Mary Jane.
This arrangement was doomed to fail and Ivy came back to Singleton to pick up her brood and make other arrangements for them.
The eldest girl Betty was placed in the care of Ivy's relatives up at PUTTY possibly one of the Cafe family. She enlisted the aid of her brother-in-law Harold Taylor, the husband of her younger sister Marie Millie who owned a truck to take two younger children to where they were to stay. It was at night and raining when they dropped a very distruaght James Keith off at the church of England Boys Orphanage at LOCHINVAR, a hamlet just North of MAITLAND. James Keith remembers the night and that the truck had rolldown blinds instead of wind up windows and these were rolled down to keep the weather out. After dropping him off they took her other daughter Madge to the Church of England Girls Orphanage at MAYFIELD, a suburb of NEWCASTLE.
Ivy would visit about once a month whenever she could and the Orphanages also arranged for Madge and James Keith to visit each other. Madge remembers seeing her brother locked up in the chook pen which was used as a mild form of punishment for children who misbehaved.
After about a year she removed her son and daughter from these Orphanages and picked up her other daughter, Betty, and took her brood back with her to Bourke Street, SYDNEY, near Moore Park, where she was living with Darcy Cardwell who sometimes used the alias of Ross. It was here that James Keith started School. Darcy used to go on a drinking spree every couple of months and was very bad tempered on these occasions.
The family later moved to 99 Clarence Street, BANKSTOWN, an outer suburb of Sydney at that time. She always had to work to support her family.
Ivy's only bit of good luck in her life was when she shared a lottery win with her daughter, Madge, and her sister. She used the money to purchase a brick cottage in PUNCHBOWL. This suburb of Sydney as well as the suburb of Bankstown are now (1997) mainly occupied by ethinic people, who on the whole are well behaved and accepted, except for two specific groups, the Vietnamese/Asians who deal in drugs and crime and the Lebanese who seem to have brought their country's problems with them and they treat Australians with distaste and disgust and are especially rude Australian women, this attitude is carried on by their younger generation.
Ivy had a heart attack and was taken to hospital, when she recupetated sufficiently she went to stay with her daughter Madge where she suffered another attack and died on 22 May 1989. She was cremated at Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney and her ashes were scattered to the winds as requested.
There is an entry in Ivy's Prayer Book, in Madges posession, dated 25 February 1955 regarding Arthur? Why?
