Jonathon James MEDHURST 12th December, 1860 - 19th July, 1938
Jonathon was the fourth child of John MEDHURST and Sarah Ann DIPLOCK and a
great grandson of John MEDHURST born 1761 and Elizabeth Rawling PIGGOT born
1774. Of their 7 children three sons, John, Edward and William came to
Australia. John, the grand father of Jonathon, arrived at Hobard Town on 26th
January, 1825 on The "Phoenix" and eight years later married Catherine
Carpenter (nee Shaw). John obtained a grant of 100 acres of land on Wattagon
Creek, WOLLOMBI. Wollombi is situated south of Singleton and south/west of
Cessnock on what was then the North Road from Parramatta to Singleton. He
died at Gosford 18th November, 1887 and is buried under the name of MEADOWS.

Jonathon's Father, John, was born at St. Albans, Wollombi, 16th December, 1832
Died 24th June, 1905 and is burried at Boggy Swamp, Private Cemetery, PUTTY.
His wife Sarah Ann born 5th August, 1836 at Seaham near Morpeth, and died 3rd
December, 1911 is burried at Martindale Creek, DENMAN. John and Sarah Ann
were married at Wollombi 9th May, 1854. They had twelve children between 1855
and 1879. Refer to "A Medhurst Story" by Jean Sykes in the "Medhurst Pioneers"
Jonathon married Eliza CAFE who was only 15 years of age on the same day that
his brother Edward Wiliam married Eliza"s mother Maria Jane CAFE, the widow of
Thomas CAFE, a policeman who accidentally shot himself climbing through a
fence. The were married on 11th January, 1888. Jonathan was born at Yango,
Wollombi and is buried Singleton. His wife Eliza was born 16th June, 1873 at
Branch Creek, Wollombi and she passed on just a few months after her husband
2nd October, 1938. They had a family of 13 children, Ivy Sarah Ann is their
seventh child.
The family were graziers and dairy farmers as well as rearing pigs and after
giving up farming they moved in with their daughter Olive Bertha and her
husband William Thomas Taylor at Glenridding near Singleton.
Their children most of whom were farmers have scattered from Howes Valley,
Putty, Singleton, Cessnock, Sydney and Queensland.
