Mary Sarah Jane Medhurst was born at Inverell on 13th August 1873.
She worked hard as a young girl when her mother ran a boarding house. She and her brother Rowland used to walk over frosty paddocks to collect milk and have it back at the boarding house by 7 am for the boarder's breakfast. She spent many hours ironing late at night withpot irons. These were the only irons in used those days and used to be heated on the stove, as one iron cooled it would be replaced by another. As a young adult, and before her marriage Mary worked at Myall Creek Station, near Bingara. This was very close to where he sister Annie and her hsuband Donald had the Cedar Tree Hotel.
Mary married George Francis at St. Johns Anglican Curch, Bingara on the 26th January 1901. George worked firstly at Myall Creek Station and later at Inverary Station near Inverell. Mary and George's children, Owen born 1903, Thelma 1905, Mary 1908 and Rowland 1911, all were registered as being born at Inverell. No doubt Mary wanted her mother, who was a mid-wife, to deliver her children. For Rowland's birth certificate his father gave his place of residence as Inverary Station. The family moved to Inverell as George's health began to fail. He engaged in tin mining to supplement the family's income in his last years. George died on the 6th June 1916 at Inverell, just fifteen years after he and Mary were married.
Mary married for the second time to William Wells. There was no issue from this marriage. William died on the 23rd August 1938 at Inverell, predeceasing his wife by seventeen years. Mary lived on at Inverell where she was well liked in the neighbourhood, being a very hard worker with a kindly disposition. She was very fond of children. After her daughter Mary Cooper's death in 1948, she reared her family and another family as well. Years earlier Mary's mother had lived with her and she cared for her with much love and devotion until her death.
Mary died on the 15th February 1955 at Inverell and is buried at the Anglican Cemetery, Inverell. In an obituary notice in the local newspaper, Mary was described as one of natures gentlewomen. She made numerous friends in the district, all of whom held her in high esteem.
As told by Mary's grand-daughter, Norma Brasen
to Zelia Thornton.
