Joshua James MEDHURST 1872 - 1929

Joshu lived most of his life in the Howes Valley/ Putty district. Owning a 400
acre property at "WEENEY", Putty. He was dairy farming and had about 100 cows
which he milked by hand and sending the milk and cream to Singleton Butter
Factory His son Albert Roy (Roy) lived with him for about 18 months.
His wife Ada and their youngest boy, Reginald, managed a rented farm at Putty
Creek. These two farms being about 10 miles apart. As the family were on
good terms they used to visit each other regularly. The reason that they ran
the two properties was so that they could obtain sufficient funds to acquire a
property closer to Singleton.
After visiting his wife for the week-end, Joshua left on a Sunday to return to
"Weeney". This was the last time anyone saw Joshua alive. He had requested
his son Billy (Clarence Roy) come to visit him on the Monday. Billy and Henry
George Gibbs rode to "Weeney" only to find Joshua dead on his bed with a rifle
nearby.
(Henry George Gibbs was actually George Henry Gibbs, Joshua's wife Ada's eldest (half) brother.)
At a Coroner's inquest it was found that, after hearing all the witnesses,
there was no doubt Joshua had commited suicide. Reg had visited his father
prior to his death, and when the two were riding back to Putty Creek, Joshua
had asked Reg to speak louder, as he, Joshua, was going silly in the head.
Whilst visiting his wife he complained of being sick and had a pain in the
back of his head and down the left his side. When asked how long he had been
sick, he replied, since the previous Friday morning.
His wife visited him regularly, taking cooking with her. She also gave him
plenty of home cooking when returning after visits to her. Ada also washed
and ironed his clothes and cleaned his home on her visits to him.
Joshua and Ada must have had a lot of sadness in their life, loosing a
daughter, Hilda Martha, aged 5 years as the result of burns. Then loosing
twins when they were about 2 years old dying 4 days apart. Another son died at
4 1/2 years, a daughter at 1 month, another son at 19 years of age and another
at 26 years. Joshua is buried at Putty and Ada who went to live with her son
in Denman is buried in Denman Cemetery.
