On the 2 March 1857, George Medhurst married Ann Matilda Bridge at Wolloombi.
Ann's parents being Joseph Bridge Jnr. and Sarah Woodbury, her grand father was Matthew Everingham who arrived with the First Fleet in 1788. Ann's father lived in a defacto relationship with Mary Ann Carpenter, George's half sister.
George and Ann were married at the lovely St. John's Anglican Church, Wollombi. This church with it's massive cedar doors, beautifully polished pews and natural stone walls, is in almost exactly the same condition to-day, as when consecrated by Bishop Tyrill in 1894. There has been a slight lengthening of the nave, that is all.
The first three children of George and Ann were born in the Wollombi district. Soon after these births, the last occuring in 1861, a move was made North to Inverell. The fourth child, Walter Edward Alexander was born in Inverell in 1863.
Travelling with the young Medhurst family were the Prestons, their mode of transport was possibly by horse teams or bullock wagons. In it's early days Inverell was known as Green Swamps, even in the early 1860's when the Medhurst's arrived, there were few buildings. George made a living as a carrier and Ann was a Mid-Wife, supervising a small Private Hospital come Boarding House.
George predeceased his wife by many years, dying in Sydney on 19 December 1888, aged 50 years. Ann lived on for another thirty nine years. Three years before her death she wrote to her grandson Albert Wearne, congratulating ho the birth of his daughter Joan. In this letter she said she had fifty great-grand-children and one great-great-grandson. A descendant of the Prestons family who live close to her in Chester Street, Inverell, remembers the Anglican Priest going to her home when she was dying. He gave her the last rites and sang "Nearer My God To Thee".
Ann died 4 July 1927. The legacy which she left to her descendants was that children must be cared for to the very best of one's ability.
Zelia Thornton.
