WALTER EDWARD MEDHURST
Walter enlisted on 2 Sept 1915 at Inverell. He embarked at Sydney for overseas service with the 4th Reinforcements, 30th Australian Infantry Battalion on 11 March 1916 per H.M.A.T. "Orsova". Served in France with the 30th Australian Battalion. He is buried in Bowes East Communal Cemetry, Amiens, France. Row A, Crave 8.
A Promoted Soldier.
----------------------------------
A brave boy left his native land
And loved ones too, that he
Upon a strange shore
Might fight for liberty.
Foe years he did his duty
For his King and Empire too,
His freedom and his life-
An Australian brave and true.
The seventh day of April
On the battle field of France;
A weary worn torn soldier
Saw the foe advance.
He marched the Plains of Egypt
Under the setting sun;
In hope to gain a victory
When the war was done.
Now he's gained victory
He's gained promotion grand;
no more he'll fear the enemy
In a war stricken land.
No more he'll serve his earthy King,
In the trenches grim and cold;
Now he's gained a victory.
And serves his Heavenly King.
He's just across the river,
And resting on the shore;
He will no more be weary
Or dread the cursed war.
Beneath the smile of mother
And the shadows of her wing;
He lives in heavenly pastures
And serves his Heavenly King.
Written by his Aunt Bertha Medhurst Bridge.
